You and Your Phone

Grand Risings friend.

Our smartphones have become  indispensable business and personal tools, often blurring the lines between convenience and dependence. As a coach, I understand the pull of social media and the wealth of interesting (and addictive) content available. However, it's essential to acknowledge the potential health risks associated with excessive phone use, especially regarding electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).

Here are some practical rules I follow to cultivate a healthier relationship with my device.

1. Manage Blue Light Exposure

One of the simplest yet most impactful changes you can make is to enable a blue light filter on your phone. Blue light has been shown to disrupt our sleep patterns by tricking our brain into thinking it’s still daytime. By using this filter in the evening, we can promote better sleep quality and ensure we feel rested and rejuvenated. A good night’s sleep is the foundation of a productive day.

2. Prioritize Speaker Calls + Using Wired Headphones

When it comes to making calls, opt for speaker mode or wired headphones instead of holding your phone to your ear. Wireless headphones, like AirPods or Bluetooth devices, can expose you to even more EMFs, which is something we should be cautious about. Keeping the phone away from your head not only reduces exposure but also protects your children from potential harm.

3. Utilize Airplane Mode

When your phone is in your pocket or while you sleep, consider putting it in airplane mode. This simple action limits its interaction with cell towers, reducing the EMF exposure to your body. It’s a small step that can lead to significant health benefits, allowing you to rest easy knowing your device isn’t actively sending or receiving signals throughout the night.

4. Avoid Using Devices While Charging

Using your phone or laptop while it’s plugged in can be detrimental to your health. When devices are connected to a power source, they emit a positive charge that may contribute to inflammation and other health issues. By keeping these devices unplugged while in use, you can mitigate potential risks and foster a healthier environment for yourself.

5. Use the Off Switch

There are certain situations when my phone is never on.  Anytime I am spending focussed time with my children and anytime I'm in nature.  Remember, the ever present now is all there is.  Fight the feeling that you are somehow missing something by not paying attention to your device.  You will miss something by being tied to it; your life.

While it might be tempting to chuck your phone down a well, that’s not a practical solution for most of us. Instead, strive for balance. Phones may have their downsides, but when used mindfully, they can be tools for growth and genuine connection.

Embrace these strategies to cultivate a healthier relationship with your device. Remember, the goal is not to eliminate technology from our lives but to interact with it in a way that supports our overall well-being.
